FIRST EDITION: RARE. A catechism in Latin and Annamese by the great French Jesuit evangelist and linguist. Rhodes arrived in Cochin China in January 1624 'and within six months had learnt Cochinchinois, invented the quoc-ngu, by which Vietnamese could be represented by Roman characters, and evangelized much of the region between the coast and the Annamese Highlands' (Howgego). Expelled with his fellow missionaries in 1625, Rhodes returned in 1627, and during the next three years is said to have baptized 6700 converts. He returned for a third and final visit in 1640. Cordier Indosinica, 2938; Howgego I, R33-34.
