Lot Essay

The firm of Joseph Roll was based at this address from 1844. Exhibiting in every Parisian Exposition from that date until 1867, they were awarded several prizes. Roll's widow took over the business in 1877 and won a gold medal at the Exposition Universelle in 1889. Their premises were very close to Francois Linke's, which helps explain the stylistic connection between their output and his.
