Lot Essay

This bowl is among a certain number of works made in the 1950s carrying the seals of both Lucie Rie and Hans Coper. During this period, Coper worked alongside Rie, often throwing the wares according to Rie's designs, and then handing the pot back to her hands to execute the glazing and decoration. This collaboration, producing some of the most compelling of modern ceramics, allowed Coper to add a subtle influence on Rie's seminal artistic endeavor.
