(In most copies the delayed returns for South Carolina are tipped to p.[54]; in this copy that slip is not bound in, leaving p.[54] blank; lower margins of pp. 34, 42 and 43 shaved by binder). Nineteenth-century half morocco and marbled boards (rubbed at extremities).
FIRST EDITION. THE FIRST UNITED STATES CENSUS, evidently printed in a small edition for distribution by the Secretary of State, at whose urging the enumeration was originally undertaken. BOLDLY SIGNED JEFFERSON AS SECRETARY OF STATE, ("Th:Jefferson") in ink on page 56, to certify of the accuracy of the statistics. [With:] JEFFERSON. Tipped to back endpages is a press copy of an autograph letter signed to John Barnes, Monticello, 8 October 1797. 1 p., oblong (6½ x 7¾ in.). Endorsed on verso by Jefferson. Regarding an expected quarterly dividend, involving Col. James Monroe: "...I therefor inclose you a power of attorney to receive them, and as I do not know the exact amount I have not given a draught on you, but by this present, desire you to pay the amount whatever it is to Col. Monroe's order. I have informed him it will be a few dollars over 300. He will accordingly authorize some person too call on you for the amount...." Published in Papers, ed. B. Oberg, 29:544.
