4o (268 x 200 mm). Printed in red and black throughout, woodcut papal arms on verso of title. Engraved title and portrait of the author by Claude Mellan after Gian Lorenzo Bernini, full-page engraving on b1v, numerous head- and tail-pieces, often incorporating the Barberini bees. (Some occasional pale marginal dampstaining, some pale foxing.) Contemporary Italian gilt-ruled limp vellum (small tear on spine). Provenance: ownership inscription dated 1649 on title; acquired from Marlborough Rare Books, 1989.

FIRST EDITION of the most luxurious of the Collegio Romano's publications. The fine engraved title of Hercules wrestling with the lion and the portrait of Barberini were engraved by Claude Mellan after Gian Lorenzo Bernini. Bernini's rise to fame was largely due to the support of Pope Urban VIII with whom he worked on the interior decoration of St. Peter's. Brunet I:648.
