Errata leaf at end. 72 etched plates after and possibly by Bibiena, engraved portrait of Bibiena, 10 large historiated or ornamental woodcut initials, 2 woodcut head-pieces, 32 woodcut tail-pieces. Contemporary Roman gold-tooled red morocco by the Vatican Workshop, sides with outer gilt panel surrounding, a floral roll around sides with double-fillet inner panel, corner-pieces including large azured tulips and leaves and a vase, spine in seven compartments with six raised bands, gilt-lettered in one, gilt-decorated in the remaining, edges gilt (some minor rubbing, a few small stains). Provenance: acquired from Bernard Breslauer, 1974.

FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE, before the author's address was added to the imprint and with THE PLATES IN FIRST STATE, before the addition of plate numbers. The use of acute diagonal perspective in stage design was introduced in this work. In it, Bibiena, the most renowned member of the family noted for their theatre designs and baroque decorations, revolutionized baroque set design and this work had a profound influence on Piranesi.

The Architettura is divided into five books: geometry and its application to architecture (six plates); civil architecture in general (thirty-nine plates); perspective (fourteen plates); stage design and set construction (eleven plates); and the mechanics of lifting and moving sets (two plates).
