BLOME, Richard (1635-1705). The Gentlemans Recreation. ... An Encyclopedy of the Arts and Sciences ... [and] Horsemanship, Hawking, Hunting, Fowling, Fishing and Agriculture. With a Short Treatise of Cock-Fighting. London: S. Roycroft for R. Blome, 1686.
2 parts in one, 2o (415 x 266 mm). Title printed in red and black, additional engraved title, 10 plates of suscribers' arms, 30 plates on the arts and sciences, 45 plates mostly on hunting and hawking, woodcut text illustrations, with the initial privilege leaf. Ruled in red throughout. (Some light browning and soiling, margins repaired on Ddd2, some minor spotting at end.) Contemporary English Restoration binding, gold-tooled red morocco in the style of Samuel Mearne, edges gilt (spine ends repaired, minor wear to extremities). Provenance: William Cooper, Archdeacon of York (1778 bookplate and inscription); John Ellis (armorial bookplate); Vernon (bookplate); Fredericks Hall of Copenhagen (signature at end); acquired from Abraham & May, 1969.
FIRST EDITION of one of the great 17th-century sporting titles. It covers all subjects of interest and use to a gentleman, beginning with summaries of logic, natural philosophy, astronomy, navigation, warfare, drawing and painting and handling in considerable detail horsemanship, hawking, hunting, and agriculture. Many of its plates are dedicated to a member of the nobility or gentry, some of whom lent their knowledge and expertise to the work. Schwerdt remarked that perfect copies are so rare that he had seen only two out of about dozen. Harting 41; Schwerdt I, pp. 72-73 ("contains an enormous store of information"); Westwood & Satchell p.35l; Wing G-3213.
