Lot Essay

This was one of Brueghel's most popular compositions: a picture dated 1607 is in the Galleria Spada, Rome (K. Ertz, Jan Brueghel der Ältere: Die Gemälde, Lingen, 2008, no. 152), a version in oils was at Christie's, New York, 26 January 2011, lot 23, and there are drawings in the Metropolitan Museum, New York (Ertz, fig. 178) and in the Museum of Art, Rhode Island School of Design (D.J. Johnson, Old Master Drawings from the Museum of Art, R.I.S.D., Providence, Rhode Island, 1983, no. 75). A drawing of the composition attributed to Jan Brueghel I was sold at Christie's, New York, 26 January 2011, lot 268.
