Lot Essay

The seal is that of Henry Hyde, Lord Cornbury and 2nd Earl of Clarendon (1638-1709). Hyde is frequently mentioned by the 17th century diarist John Evelyn. See R. Dumbrell Understanding Antique Wine Bottles, (Woodbridge, 1983), pp. 245-246 where another bottle with the same seal is recorded, found at Cornbury Park, Oxfordshire.
