Lot Essay

These panels, which were once attributed to the 'Master of the Darmstadt Passion', can be dated to around 1480, and are typical of the Swabian school of the period. Their composition and colouring can be compared to the altarpiece formerly in the convent in Lichtental, near Baden-Baden (now in Karlsruhe), which has recently been associated with the work of Hans Schüchlin, who worked in Ulm. We are grateful to Dr Bernd Konrad for his assistance in cataloguing this lot.
