Lot Essay

The composition of the present lot derives from the work by Leonardo in the refectory of the convent of Santa Maria della Grazie, Milan. The apostles are depicted here in broadly the same poses as those in the Milan painting, with the exception of Bartholomew on the far left. There are, however, some notable variations, with servants added to the background, a group of putti included upper left and a gilt ewer and dog painted in the foreground.
