Lot Essay

We are grateful to David Mannings for confirming the attribution, on the basis of images; he dates the picture stylistically to c. 1755-1760. The sitter bears some resemblance to Stringer Lawrence (1697-1775) as he appears in a portrait by Reynolds of c. 1760 (London, India Office; see D. Mannings, Sir Joshua Reynolds: A Complete Catalogue of His Paintings, New Haven and London, 2000, I, p. 300, no. 1092; II, p. 280, fig. 537).
