Lot Essay

The present cup and cover shares numerous similarities with an example offered at auction from the collection of Lily and Edmond J. Safra and described as 'German, 17th century' (Sotheby's, New York, 19 October 2011, lot 778, 122,500USD). Both have shallow lids above a body with straight sides and conforming lobed stem and foot. The only significant difference is in the form of each finial, which is figurative in the present case and consisting of eight spiral shafts in the Safra example.
