Lot Essay

This picture is a sketch for the more highly finished picture at Sutton Park. Sutton Park, residence of the Sheffield family since 1963, when the family seat moved from Normanby Park in Lincolnshire, is an elegant Palladian house attributed to Thomas Atkinson, and built circa 1740. The Sheffield family have restored the interiors, adding chimney-pieces from Normanby, and in particular decorating the boudoir with fine Chinese wallpaper.

John Sheffield was made Earl of Mulgrave by Charles II, later becoming Queen Anne's favourite, and being created Marquess of Normanby and Duke of Buckingham. Buckingham House was the home of the Duke until it was sold to George III in 1762, and replaced in 1762, by Buckingham Palace. Many fine pictures came from Buckingham House including portraits of the Duke and his family by Wissing, Kneller and Highmore. One of the Highmore portraits can be seen above the chimney-piece.
