Lot Essay

A print of the same composition appears in Villamil's famous travel book España artistica y monumental. Vistas y descripción de los sitios y monumentos más notables de España (G. Pérez Villaamil and Don P. de la Escosura eds., Paris, 1842, vol. I). Please refer to lot 335.
Villaamil and David Roberts met in Seville in 1833. The English artist highly influenced the style of Villaamil and he surely played an important role in the creation of the above-mentioned album of etchings. The production of this volume was probably inspired by the publication of Roberts' Picturesque Sketches in Spain in 1837.
