Lot Essay

This handscroll is an exact replica of Chapter 26 of the Lotus Sutra (the chapter of the Dharanis, or divine spells) of the famous Heian-period sutras known as the Heike Nogyo (the sutra dedicated by the Heike, or Taira family). That set of thirty-three lavishly decorated scrolls was dedicated to Itsukushima Shrine in 1164 by Taira no Kiyomori, and is now registered as a National Treasure. For more information on Tanaka Shinbi, see the catalogue note to lot 647.
