United Silla dynasty (9th century)
The slender figure standing on a stepped, lotiform base, the right hand held upward in the gesture of protection (abhaya mudra) and the left hand held palm downward and outward in the gesture of fulfilling the vow (varada mudra), the hair arranged in rows of snail-shell curls rising to the low usnisa, the protuberence of wisdom; the drapery articulated in the front of the figure in folds falling in organized u-shaped pleats from the shoulders, the back of the figure plain with a shallow, oblong recess along the spine
