Lot Essay

Michael Gallis bought his first Chinese painting, a Qi Baishi from Jung Ying Tsao of Far East Fine Arts in San Francisco in June 1966. In 1967, as a graduate student at the University of Pennsylvania, he began to meet New York art dealers, including Ned Owyang at Michou Gallery. In 1980 Mr. Gallis met C.C. Wang when he joined the Friends of Asian Art at the Detroit Institute of Arts when they visited major dealers and collectors in New York. The result was a life-long friendship with C.C. Wang and keen interest in Chinese paintings.
