Lot Essay

The present lot is a copy of the pair of carved sphinxes representing Autumn by Joseph Deschamps (d. 1788), created for the Belvedere of Marie Antoinette at the Trianon, Versailles, 1777-1778, which were sold Christie's, London, 9 December 2004, lot 240.
