A buff sandstone stele of a bull-headed deity
India, Rajasthan or Madhya Pradesh, 11th/12th century
Seated in lalitasana on the coils of a serpent over a throne supported by offering vessels, holding a fruit, lotus, axe and the snout of the serpent in his four hands, dressed in a short dhoti and adorned with the sacred thread and various sashes and necklaces, the central bull's head with gently flared nostrils and almond-shaped eyes surmounted by a tall lotiform diadem, flanked by two human faces and backed by a nimbus with a foliate band above
