Tibet, 18th century
Tsongkhapa seated in dhyanasana on a lotus base at center, his right hand raised in abhayamudra and his left holding a water vessel, clad in heavy robes and yellow cap and flanked by lotus blossoms supporting the sword and book, surrounded on all sides by banks of lineage figures with Buddhas seated in pavilions in the clouds above and various Buddhist deities below, all set amidst a watery landscape

Lot Essay

Tsongkapa sits above a pyramid of meditational deities, Buddhas, bodhisattvas, arhats and Pratyekabuddhas and protector deities. Above him are a group of lineage teachers, flanked by Maitreya (top left) and Amitabha (top right). On the banks are the Yogachara lineage (left) and the Madyamaka lineage (right). Finally in the foreground are the worldly gods and goddesses.
