Lot Essay

The Paris firm of Dagoty-Honoré, in operation from 1816-1820, designed similar patterns for both the Monroe and Jackson presidencies. The former features an amaranth colored border with a central eagle, while the latter bears a marbled blue surrround with gold rims and central detail of the United States coat-of-arms, with an eagle, appearing in reverse and highlighted within a yellow sunburst design. For related examples from the state service of Andrew Jackson, see Margaret Brown Klapthor, Official White House China 1789 to the Present (New York, 1999), pp. 54-61.
