According to Martha Hoppin, "Courtship is the theme of the old Scottish song that inspired Brown's title: 'Gin a body, meet a body, comin thru the rye, gin a body, kiss a body, need a body cry" is the complete stanza." (The World of J.G. Brown, p. 32)
