A WHITISH JADE RECTANGULAR OPENWORK BELT FITTING
MING DYNASTY, 16TH-17TH CENTURY
Made in the form of a rectangular plaque with indented borders, the fitting is carved in openwork with a pair of deer amidst a setting of a pine tree, fronds and lingzhi. The stag grasps a sprig of lingzhi in its mouth while reclining on a rock, and the doe issues vapor enclosing a medallion carved with a fu character from her mouth. The open reverse has an animal-mask hook at one end and a vertical cross bar at the other. Together with a pale greenish-white jade rectangular openwork 'dragon' plaque, Ming dynasty, which is carved with a four-clawed dragon leaping against a background of scrolling tendrils amidst flowers in the lower corners and a bird and a bat in the upper corners.
