Lot Essay

Piet Zwart's graphic design in this 1920s informational brochure for the Dutch state owned Post, Telegraph and Telephone company (P.T.T.) is characteristically progressive and aesthetically appealing. PTT advertises in this eight page brochure their airmail service between the Netherlands and Indonesia.
The photomontage shows particular influence of the artist's relationship with El Lissitzy, who had introduced him to the technique in 1923. Zwart always referred to himself being a 'typotekt', a contraction of the words typographer and architect, as he built pages with type.
