Lot Essay

According to the inventory stamp, this commode was part of the purchases of furniture and objets d'art made by Duke Ernst I of Saxe-Coburg-Gotha (1784-1844) just after 1815 in Paris for Schloss Ehrenburg in Coburg and his country seat Schloss Greinburg in Austria. They are stamped with his cypher 'E' beneath a crown, and variously numbered. His acquisitions also included a set of pliants by Jacob Desmalter, sold Christie's, London, 1 December 2005, lots 214-215.
