Born Veracruz, Mexico, 1962. Studied at Escuela Nacional de Arte Plásticas, Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México, Mexico City, Mexico, 1981-84 and Circulo de Bellas Artes, Madrid, Spain, 1986-87. Solo exhibitions include: Musée d'art moderne de la Ville de Paris, 1995 and 1998; Serpentine Gallery, London, 2004, Museo del Palacio de Bellas Artes, Mexico, 2006; Guggenheim Museum, New York, 2012, Kunsthaus Bregenz, Austria, 2013. Group exhibitions include: New Perspectives in Latin American Art, 1930-2006: Selections from a Decade of Acquisitions, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2008; 1993, Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, New Museum, New York, 2013. He has received numerous awards, including the Seccio Espacios Alternativos prize at the Salon Nacional de Artes Plásticas in Mexico City, 1987 and the German Blue Orange prize, 2006. He lives in New York, Paris, Mexico City.
