Born Glasgow, 1966. Studied at the Glasgow School of Art, Scotland, 1984-88, and The Slade School of Art, London, 1988-90. Solo exhibitions include: Royal Scottish Academy, 1988; Musée d'Art Moderne, Centre de Georges Pompidou, Paris, 1995; Tate Liverpool, 2000; Gagosian Gallery, New York, 2003; Superhumanatural, Royal Scottish Academy Building, Edinburgh, 2006; What do you want me to say? I am already dead, Fundació Joan Miró, Barcelona, 2006; Tate Britain, London, 2010; Gagosian Gallery, New York, 2012. Group exhibitions include: Alice in Wonderland, Tate Liverpool, 2011; Compass in Hands: Selections from the Judith Rothschild Foundation Contemporary Drawing Collection, Museum of Modern Art, New York, 2009; Turner Prize: A Retrospective, Tate Britain, London, 2007. Winner of several awards including the Turner Prize, London, 1996 and the Premio 2000 at the Venice Biennale, 1997. He lives in Berlin and Glasgow.
