Lot Essay
Salim al-Katib was the son of a slave of Jamal al-Din al-Astarabadi, and a pupil of Shah Mahmud Nishapuri. He spent most of his life in Mashhad where he died around the year AH 990/1582-83 AD. Another copy of the 'Forty Traditions' was copied by him in Mashhad in AH 964/1557-58 AD. This was in the collection of Mehdi Bayani. Salim's dated works range between AH 961 and 976/1554 and 1569 AD. The author of the Golestan-i Honar states that he was unrivalled in the art of coloured calligraphy.
