THE IMMACULATE CELLAR

Over the past few years, I've gotten to know the consignor of this collection, and have seen firsthand the meticulous nature with which he amassed his phenomenal cellar. The wines listed here speak for themselves. The cellar begins with DRC, and plenty of it, including rare '99, '00, '01 and '02 assortment cases. In fact, verticals like this are a theme of the collection, and very few vintages are missing throughout the Immaculate Cellar. The majority of the DRC is, as our name indicates, immaculate, and none of it was touched since it was placed in the consignor's cellar. The DRC includes the 2010 vintage, a vertical of Montrachet, a bottle of 2002 RC, a few bottles of 1er cru, and just about every bottling of each vineyard from the last decade and a half.

Following DRC is Bordeaux, but the themes are the same. There's more quantity here-most of the lots are in the original wood-but again, all of the wine has rested untouched since it arrived on release. As you'll see from our catalog notes, those woods that had bands still had them when our team inspected the wine. Many vintages are offered in formats large and small, and the few older bottlings (the case of '90 Haut Brion, for example) is in great condition. This is truly one of the most immaculate collections of Bordeaux to be sold in New York in recent memory. Inspecting case after case of all five first growths, plus Cheval Blanc, Pétrus and Ausone, was a pleasure for our team.

Upon discussion with the consignor, we decided to round out the offering with the top wines from a few more regions. Yquem is represented, as it always is in Bordeaux collections of depth, but so are Gaja, the Super Tuscans, Grange, and a large offering of Port from the great vintages of the '90s. Again, the verticals are there, as are the original cases. I'd be remiss if I didn't point out the two bottles of the rare Taylor Scion--the believed-1855 Port as released by Taylor in a custom decanter.

Finally, a note on provenance. All of the wines in this offering were placed in the consignor's custom-made temperature-controlled home cellar on release and not moved until Christie's specialists inspected them for this auction. The consignor is within a couple hours of New York City, and all wines were transported to the Christie's warehouse in a temperature controlled truck. All of the wines in this offering were bought on release or en primeur, and this is the first time they are being sold in the secondary market. -Charles Antin
