Lot Essay

The intensely naturalistic palm frond bases on these unusual tables relate to the extravagant Rococo interiors in the Neues Schloss at Bayreuth. One room, aptly named the Palmenzimmer, was probably based on a 1754 drawing by Carlo Galli Bibiena (P. Krückman, aradies Des Rokoko Das Bayreuth der Markgräfin Wilhelmine, vol. II, Munich, 1998, p. 272, fig.299) and features massive palm tree colonettes as well as a pair of closely related consoles. Ibid,,vol. I, p. 125, fig.30).
