Lot Essay

The richly carved frames of these fauteuils, with sinuous lines and distinctive heart-shaped cabochons, is typical of the work of the celebrated Tilliard dynasty of menuisiers. A chair of a similar profile by Jean Baptiste Tilliard I, with the same C-scroll clasps heading the legs, is ilustrated in P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier Français du XVIIIe Siècle, Paris, 1989, p. 834, fig. C.
