Tasting note: Attractive, impressive in its early days. Two recent notes: Still surprisingly deep, velvety; nose low-keyed, taking time to open up, and lacking its usual instant varietal fragrance; sweet, good fruit, a lovely big mouthful though coarse textured and 'thick' tannins. Last tasted Nov 2005 **(*) Now-2012 M.B.
The 1996 exhibits a dark plum/ruby/purple colour that is just beginning to lighten at the edge, surprisingly velvety tannins and a classic Pauillac bouquet of lead pencil shavings, cedarwood, blackcurrants, sweet cherries and spice box. This medium to full-bodied, elegant, savoury, broad wine is still five years away from full maturity. It should continue to drink well for another 10-15 years.
