Lot Essay

A variety of dial layouts exist for reference 6036. The dial of the present watch is of particular and well-preserved beauty with a charmingly aged surface, clear signature and numbers. The bright two-tone silvered sections of the watch accentuate the depth of detail on this dial, ranging from the facetted square hour markers in the shape of pyramids and the Arabic 12 to the fine, slightly recessed, circular engine-turning for the subsidiary dials and the inlaid gold-coloured Rolex crown subtly located between the two windows for day and month, all framed by the date ring with the appealing 31 blue Arabic numbers for the month. The blue of the date stands in harmony with the blued steel hands of the subsidiary dials, as well as the blued steel chronograph and arrow hand for the date located on the centre arbour.

It is rare to come across such a beautiful example of this much sought-after two-piece case Oyster chronograph reference, which followed in the footsteps of references 4767 and 5036, just preceding reference 6236.

Reference 6036
Reference 6036, the third generation of the celebrated "Dato Compax" Oyster triple calendar chronograph model presented by Rolex, was available with various dial layouts, cased mainly in yellow gold and in stainless steel.

The watch on offer here is illustrated in 100 Superlative Rolex Watches by John Goldberger, p. 88. Further examples of reference 6036 are described and illustrated in I Cronografi Rolex - La Leggenda, Pucci Papaleo Editore, pp. 380 - 401.
