The wristwatch with circular mechanical jewelled lever movement, oval-shaped dial with small central Arabic hour ring on a blue, white and cream painted miniature neoclassical scene signed Paillet, large oval-shaped curved case, diamond-set bezel, pearl-set crown, curved back secured by four screws, platinum wowen bracelet with diamond-set clasp, all with pearl-set surround, case stamped with maker's mark for Verger Frères, French Assay marks and numbered 5205, dial signed Paillet;

The wristwatch offered in this lot is illustrated in Die schönsten Armbanduhren vergangener Jahrzehnte by Giampiero Negretti/Franco Nencini, p. 333, and illustrated and described in Ore d'Oro 2 by Jader Barracca, Giampiero Negretti, Franco Nencini, p. 167.

Fernand Paillet (1850-1918) was a renowned enamellist, mastering the fine art of painted enamel miniatures. The miniature painter of the house of Boucheron, he also often worked for Verger Frères and used classical motives to decorate jewellery and watches. Examples of Paillet's work are owned by the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.

The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co. Ltd. was one of the leading English manufacturers and retailers of fine watches, silver and jewellery situated at 112 Regent Street, London. In 1952 the company merged with the renowned jeweller Garrard & Co.
