Read moreThe Gutai movement was a Japanese radical and avant-garde group formed in the postwar era. Reacting against various contemporary boundaries, its members experimented with new art forms including painting, performance and large-scale interactive environments, producing a highly adventurous body of work. Nasaka Yuko (1938 - ) studied under one of the movements founders, Yoshihara Jiro, becoming one of the most prominent members of the movements second phase (1962-72). Due to her preference of repetitive forms and industrial materials, Nasakas works are considered to echo the mechanical and mass productive age which framed 1960s Japan. Uemae Chiyu (1920 - ) was born in Kyoto and studied basic painting techniques while working at a kimono laundry shop. However, an encounter with Yoshihara Jiros work led him to become a founding member of the group in 1954, which led to international exhibitions and wide acclaim. His distinctive oil paintings consist of multilayered material built up from long pointillist patterns and he has often worked with everyday materials such as matches and sawdust.
