Lot Essay

This sketch in watercolour is typical of studies Tuke made of his models on Newporth beach in Falmouth, with its distinctive rocks. The figure leaning on the rowing boat wearing a hat is probably Charlie Mitchell who appeared in many of Tuke's paintings both clothed and nude.

We are grateful to Catherine Wallace for her help in preparing this catalogue entry.
