oval, 2.3/8 in. (60 mm.) high, ormolu mount within rectangular black wood frame made by John Miers, the reverse with inscriptions in ink 'Painted by Barber / Southampton St Strand. / [...] 1806' and 'Died / 5t<\sup>h<\sup> June 1832 / buried in [...] / Church [...] / aged. 58.'

Lot Essay

Captain Peter Lely (1774-1832) was commissioned 2nd Lieutenant R.N., in 1793 and made 1st Lieutenant in 1795. He served on H.M.S. Glatton during the Battle of Copenhagen, 1801, where the ship was commanded by Captain William Bligh, famous for his actions surrounding the mutiny of the Bounty. Lely was made Captain in 1803 and was Senior Royal Marine Officer on H.M.S. Revenge at the Battle of Trafalgar, where he was wounded. He retired on half-pay in 1813 and died in Bath in 1832.
