WANG DACANG (1899-1953)
It is finely decorated with a mountainous riverscape in which scholars and their attendant gather below a towering rocky cliff. A river meanders through the landscape with pavilions in the distance and figures and fisherman in boats. A cursive calligraphic inscription to the upper section of the composition bears two seals reading Dacang, Yisu with a further seal Dacang busi that may be translated as "Dacang Immortal" to the lower right.

Lot Essay

Wang Dacang was one of a group of artists known collectively as the "Eight Friends of Zhushan". He studied with Pan Taoyu and Bi Botai and is known for his landscapes.
