FIRST EDITIONS, one of two issues of the principal work. Sir Josiah Child held the largest single block of shares in the East-India company, valued at at least £17,000 in 1680, and £51,150 by 1691. In 1681-82 he fought off a major attack by the Levant Company which, threatened by competition from East Indian imports, denounced the refusal of the directors to open up the company to new investors.
