FIRST EDITION OF THORNTON'S 'MOST ENDURING LEGACY'. Mill described this important contribution to monetary economics, produced in the wake of the 1797 banking crisis, as 'the clearest exposition that I am acquainted with, in the English language, of the modes in which credit is given and taken in a mercantile community.' Overall, 'the work provided a complete account of the English monetary system: not only the circulation of money, but also a detailed discussion of how the Bank of England should act to prevent instability, and also how to deal with instability whenever it occurred' (ODNB). Einaudi 5617; Goldsmiths' 18526; Kress B-4612; Stephens p. 32.
