FIRST EDITION. Wales, a mathematician and astronomer, sailed with Cook on his second and third voyages. Despite encountering strong opposition to his enquiries, he demonstrated that the population of England and Wales was increasing. This was contrary to Dr. Price's calculations, which had been based on the 1690 Hearth Tax returns and the Window Tax returns of 1759 and 1777. RARE. Only one copy is recorded at auction in recent times (ABPC/AE). Goldsmiths' 12140.
