Full-page engraved map of Scandinavia and neighbouring countries, 467 woodcut vignettes including repeats, printer's device on title-page and final verso, large woodcut initials. (Title soiled, small marginal tear to title and engraved map, crudely repaired tear to A1, marginal waterstaining to approximately 30 leaves, tiny marginal wormtrack to final 3 leaves, occasional scattered small stains.) Contemporary vellum, modern slipcase (small repaired wormholes and some soiling). Provenance: erased ownership inscription on title -- Ranutiti-Aloysii Scarpacci (ownerhisp inscription).
FIRST EDITION IN ITALIAN. Magnus's great ethnographical and geographical survey of Scandinavia was first published in Latin in 1555. This Italian translation re-uses the woodcuts, with a few variations, illustrating all aspects of life: local customs, warfare, trades and occupations, animals and monsters, and daily activities. Hunting and fishing, swimming, skiing, archery and horse racing feature among popular sports. The full-page map of Scandinavia, which was a woodcut in the Latin edition, is engraved here.
