Lot Essay

Only a few works are known of the so-called Master of the Kitten, all very similar compositions, showing a cat with a still life. The present painting originally also included a cat, of which the outlines can still be observed today. However, the artist must have decided to leave it out of the composition and painted it over shortly after.

We are grateful to Fred Meijer of the RKD, The Hague for endorsing the attribution upon inspection of the original (verbal communication, 26 September 2013).
