Lot Essay

Wolter has depicted 's Lands Zeemagazijn, located near the Kattenburgerplein in Amsterdam on a sunny day. Designed by Daniel Stalpaert and built in 1655/66, as the warehouse of the Admiralty of Amsterdam, it is an example of Dutch classical architecture, when Amsterdam was the world's largest port and Amsterdam was namend "the Storehouse of the World". Since 1973 the building houses the National Maritime Museum (Scheepvaartmuseum), which used to be located in the Cornelis Schuytstraat 57, currently the building and salerooms of Christie's Amsterdam.
