Lot Essay

The present depiction of a sea nymph emerging from cascading waves was a popular theme championed by a host of Florentine artists during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Andreini's skillful treatment of the waves juxtaposing matte and polished surfaces evokes a technique often employed his contemporary, Fortunato Galli, who completed a similar figure of larger scale (sold Christie's, New York, 18-19 April 2012, lot 488, $122,500). Another example of the present composition by Andreini sold Christie's, London, 2 October 1997 (£23,000).
