Lot Essay

We are grateful to Diana Scarisbrick for her thoughts on the spectacular jewellery in this portrait, which reflects the sitter's wealth and status. The collar is a carcanet, composed of linked scrolled cartouches, each set with an alternate ruby and diamond in a box shaped collet, between narrower scrolled settings with twin pearls. Both rings are set in raised box collets, as in the cartouches of the collar.
