Lot Essay

Arthur Drey was a German poet closely associated with the early development of the Expressionist movement. He joined Kurt Hiller's influential literary society, Der Neue Club, as a student in Berlin, but he spent the majority of his life in the United States. Drey was a life-long pacifist and activist. He believed that "art should be an expression of a personality" (p. 113 in S. West, The Visual Arts in Germany 1890-1937: Utopia and Despair).
