522 x 306mm. 39 lines written in a late Carolingian notarial script in brown ink, four lines of subscriptions in a darker ink (somewhat faded and stained). In an archival folder. Provenance: (a) MARJORIE MERRIWEATHER POST (1887-1973), of New York City, heiress, socialite, philanthropist, bibliophile and the richest woman in America (on whom see N. Rubin, American Empress: The Life and Times of Marjorie Merriweather Post, 1995); her sale at Sotheby's, New York, 27 March 1972, lot 87; resold at Sotheby's 5th December 1989, lot 58.

The document records the exchange of lands between Donna Bricia, abbess of the Benedictine nunnery of San Michele di Campagna -- founded only half a century before in 1042 and in existence until 1806, just outside the walls of Verona -- and Benjamin, resident of Verona, son of -- a blank space is left here for the name -- who states that he 'lives according to the law of the Lombards'; Donna Bricia exchanges a piece of land near the church of Santa Maria 'the Consoler', for ten pieces of land whose sizes and locations are described in detail, subscribed by Benjamin, three assessors, three witnesses 'living according to the law of Rome' and three others 'living according to the law of the Lombards', and by Solomon, notary of the Sacred Palace.
