LARGE PENWORK INITIAL 'T', on a leaf from a monumental Antiphonal, in Latin, DECORATED MANUSCRIPT ON VELLUM
[Switzerland, c.1375]
635 x 460mm. The initial approximately 190 x 160mm. The stave in red and blue with foliate infills, all against a ground of intricate red and blue penwork, heading in uncials in red and blue, rubrics in red, 9 lines of text and music, verso with three initials (very slight marginal staining). In a double-sided frame. Provenance: (a) 17th-century rubrication on the recto. (b) MARK LANSBURGH.
An impressive leaf from what would once have been an enormous Swiss Antiphonal. The initial 'T' opens the Feast for a dedication of a Church: 'Terribilis est locus'. There are stylistic similarities between the present leaf and a Psalter from the Swiss cloister of Engelberg (British Library Add. MSS 22279 and 22280).
